Edward Prince of Wales visits Harare Club

In 1925, Edward, Prince of Wales during his Southern Africa tour joined the Members in the Bar. He could not spare the time for a House Dinner.

The story gets interesting when there was no barman at the bar when he walked into the bar, as the barman was outside dealing with the Royal staff. Or we can call it miscommunication amongst staff.

So the Prince was now in the bar with Members but no barman and yet he wanted a drink. So the Members had to take over the bar to serve the Prince.

So a member took up the challenge his name was, Godfrey King and he had one fear, That he might be asked by the Prince of Wales for a cocktail which he did not know how to mix.

You can imagine being Godfrey King about to serve a Prince and you have no idea what you doing. His heart must have been thumping. Praying the Prince requests for a simple drink or better he does not ask at all.

As it happened, he had to serve the Prince, who let him off the hook (at the same time reducing his palpitations) by asking for a simple cocktail that King knew how to make.

You can image the relieve King had when the Prince of Wales asked for a simple drink

I am going to be sharing more of the Club's history. so please stay tuned.
